HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an essential first aid skill. It’s needed to preserve and maintain life in anyone who becomes unresponsive or isn’t breathing.
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the latest iteration of the nationally accredited CPR course. It supersedes HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
This class is a life-saving course focusing on providing CPR (including DRSABCD protocol and safe and effective defibrillation (AED) use) in line with key recommendations from the following Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines:
- ANZCOR Guideline 3 – Recognition and First Aid Management of the Unconscious Person
- ANZCOR Guideline 4 – Airway
- ANZCOR Guideline 5 – Breathing
- ANZCOR Guideline 6 – Compressions
- ANZCOR Guideline 7 – Automated External Defibrillation in Basic Life Support
- ANZCOR Guideline 8 – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Flexible Delivery Options

Students complete the knowledge requirements of the course in their own time through their student portal online before coming into class for a single 1-hour session where they perform practical CPR skills they have learned in a simulated environment that mimics real-world conditions.
It rewards those who prefer the flexibility and freedom of online learning.

How do I get qualified for CPR?
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a good mix of both theory and practical skills.
- If you complete the Face-to-Face course, the assessment is during class.
- If you complete the Learning Online course, the assessment on the knowledge requirements is online.
- The practical assessment is completed in-class for both courses as a trainer must observe you performing your first aid skills.

How do I do CPR Learning Online?
Learning Online is a faster way to complete CPR training. Students’ complete their knowledge assessment tasks online through their student portal, so the time spent in class is reduced to just 1 hour. The in-class assessment is for the practical aspect of the course only.

- Assessing the level of consciousness for infants, children and adults
- Basic anatomical differences and first aid considerations between infants, children and adults
Your ability to provide adequate first aid to:
(Practical/skills)
- An unconscious, non-breathing adult and child (CPR, AED)
- A regurgitating or vomiting unconscious adult and child (recovery position)
- An unconscious, non-breathing infant (CPR)
- An unconscious, breathing infant (open airway)
You will also be assessed on your ability to:
- Identify when to provide CPR
- Follow DRSABCD protocol
- Complete an incident report
- Handover to emergency services
