HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting addresses first aid management to children and infants.

In addition to all the topics covered in HLTAID011 Provide First AidHLTAID012 goes more in-depth with conditions more likely to occur with infants and children, like dehydration, fever, vomiting, febrile convulsion and diarrhoea.

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is taught according to Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and is Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) approved.

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting leads to an accredited and industry recognised Childcare First Aid and CPR qualification in:

HLTAID012 may also contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations.

Flexible Delivery Options

Face-to-Face (6.5 hours in-class)

How Do I Get Qualified For First-Aid?

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting mixes theory with practical skills.

  • If you complete the Face-to-Face course, we assess you on the knowledge requirements in class.
  • If you complete the Learning Online course, you will be assessed on the knowledge requirements online.
  • The practical assessment is completed in-class for both courses, as a registered trainer must observe you performing your first aid skills.

First Aid Training Requirements

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is an accredited and practical course. We ask that you meet the following criteria: 

  • Prove you are over 18 or provide guardian or parental consent if under 18 (must be at least 14 years old to participate in FirstAidPro courses.)
  • Confirm you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Read and write
  • Communicate verbally with others
  • Perform basic manual tasks

USI Requirements

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) number is a mandatory requirement for any student wishing to undertake vocational training. A USI number is unique to you and provided by the government to keep a secure online record of your VET certifications. You can look up your number or register for a USI number quickly and easily HERE.

Face-to-Face Course Delivery

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education or care setting Face-to-Face option is solely classroom-based. The knowledge and practical assessment are both during the 6.5-hour class, led by a trusted local first-aid trainer. There are no tests out of hours or online. Everything is during the allotted time.

    • A child with non-life-threatening bleeding (bandage dressing)
    • A child in shock (reassuring them, monitoring body temperature)
    • A child who is choking (back blows, chest thrusts)
    • A child who has been bitten by a snake (Pressure Immobilisation Technique)
    • A child with a fractured arm (bandage, sling)
    • A child with a dislocated shoulder (cold compress)
    • A child with a sprained ankle (RICER)
    • A child with a nosebleed (apply pressure, lean forward)
  • We will also assess you on your ability to:
    • Identify when to provide CPR.
    • Follow DRSABCD protocol
    • Complete an incident report
    • Handover to emergency services
