HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in a remote or isolated site

In this course, you’ll acquire the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response to a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period until medical assistance is available or evacuation is possible.

This unit applies to any site where medical assistance is likely to be delayed.

Course Content

  • Prepare equipment for first aid response in the remote or isolated site.
    • Evaluate the remote or isolated site information and identify potential injuries and illnesses requiring comprehensive management.
    • According to organisational emergency response and first aid procedures, select first aid equipment and resources to manage a range of potential incidents.
    • Select communication equipment to facilitate emergency response in the remote or isolated site.
    • Complete pre-departure safety and serviceability checks on equipment.
  • Assess the situation.
    • Recognise and assess an emergency.
    • Ensure safety for self, bystanders and casualties.
    • Assess casualty to determine the extent of first aid response.
    • Identify the need for medical assistance and relay initial and concise information.
    • Triage when multiple casualties are involved.
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures.
    • Perform single-rescuer or two-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following the ARC guidelines.
    • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles.
    • Display respectful behaviour towards the casualty.
    • Obtain consent from casualty where possible.
    • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
    • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions.
    • Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond per first aid principles.
    • Assess the need to evacuate the casualty, ability to transport to medical assistance or need for external aid.
    • Administer medication as required according to medical instructions.
  • Communicate details of the incident.
    • Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
    • Report details of the incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
    • Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form.
    • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of records and information in line with applicable statutory or organisational policies.
  • Coordinate evacuation and first aid activities until assistance arrives.
    • Determine the need, in consultation with external services, to evacuate the casualty.
    • Provide accurate information about the location of the incident, number of casualties, their condition and their position to enable deployment of appropriate resources.
    • Continue to provide treatment using available resources until help arrives.
    • Prepare the site for evacuation of the patient(s).
    • On approach, assist emergency services to locate the site of the incident.
    • Follow instructions and assist emergency services personnel during evacuation.
  • Review the incident.
    • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
    • Contribute to a review of the first aid response required.

Face-to-Face Course Delivery

No Online Workbook or E-learning Required

Training and assessment are delivered Face-to-Face.

Before attending the face-to-face training session, you must complete the pre-course reading, complete a quiz, and bring it to the training session on the day. The pre-reading material is a self-paced, self-directed, and mandatory course component. The actual number of study hours required for each learner varies depending on the learners existing knowledge, skills and experience.

All learners will be assessed through a combination of the following assessment methods:

  • Practical Demonstrations: Simulated scenarios/Role playing
  • Project (Incident Report)
  • Knowledge Assessment

Course Requirements

  • Participants must be 14 years of age (Any participant under 18 must provide a parental consent form) 
  • Be able to prepare verbal incident reports or provide information to enable preparation of an incident report (e.g. first-aid report)
  • Communicate effectively and assertively in an incident (e.g. give a casualty handover)
  • Use literacy and numeracy skills as required reading, interpreting and applying guidelines and protocols (e.g. read and follow ARC guidelines)
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression and breaths) on an adult manikin placed on the floor
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of interrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression) on an infant manikin placed on the firm surface
